Granite in the Kitchen

At last, the granite is in and the kitchen is complete! And I am still doing the happy dance. I am so excited to get this done and I know I’m going to really enjoy having this wonderful surface in my kitchen. So much better than tile on the countertops, along with a white sink and faucet, not practical. Are you ready for the tour? Here’s a reminder of what it looked like BEFORE granite:

And AFTER, below:

As you can imagine, I’m just thrilled with the outcome. It took them 4 hours to get the granite installed and several things had to be done to get it in just right, but those guys did an outstanding job and I’d highly recommend the company I used.

IMG_5020

Our old white toaster had seen better days, so I got a new stainless steel one from Target to match the other appliances in our kitchen. I also added the pulls on the drawers for a little update and I love them. I ended up replacing all the knobs since 2 years ago I ordered some matte black knobs and they all started chipping off with an ugly gray metal showing through. I had bought them on Ebay. I also bought all of these on Ebay from another seller. He assured me that these oil rubbed bronze knobs and pulls should not turn. Let’s hope that is the case! At least they were a good deal. The standard edge I chose is called Demi-bullnose, which is just rounded with a slight bevel from the top edge.

IMG_5021

Close up of Napoli granite. I’m really, really happy with this color. Love all the black flecks in it too.

IMG_5025

One corner with my tole tray.

IMG_5014

The new black Blanco silgranite sink, which I’m also thrilled with. It’s nice and deep and I can place my 9x13 pans flat in the bottom, unlike my old sink. Undermount rocks! The faucet is Moen Annabelle and I really love it too, with the pulldown sprayer.

IMG_5016

I’m SO going to enjoy the undermount feature and the fact that all crumbs can be pushed right into the sink.

IMG_5017

I’ve heard great things from friends about these Blanco granite sinks and I’m looking forward to putting mine to the test. I love the way it looks too.

IMG_5023

With all the black in the granite and in my kitchen appliances of stainless and black, the black sink looks right at home.

IMG_5032

Got this cute little iron stand at a yardsale years ago for a couple bucks. I love the little birdie on it.

IMG_5019

The whole kitchen looking towards diningroom.

IMG_5018

Looking towards breakfast nook with the new corner cabinet. I'm always asked about the paint color in here: it's Laura Ashley Olive 4, from Lowes.

IMG_5027

And the French cupboard that you've seen before.

IMG_5028

Rearranged this piece a little during the process.

So, there’s the kitchen! Hope you enjoyed the complete tour and the new granite. I know granite is a splurge and we don’t often splurge on a lot of big things, so to me it was well worth it to get such a great update in the kitchen. Not to mention, I’ll enjoy it every single day!

  3. Very pretty... I agree with the sink choice - that would be great to have the 9 x 13 dishes lay flat AND swipe the crumbs.

  4. Oh Rhoda, it is just beautiful. Isn't granite wonderful? I love how you can place your hot pans on it too. You've got the color I wanted to!! My husband wanted the black granite with the green and gold flecks so we went with that. Why I have no idea because the kitchen is merely a pass thru for him, ha ha. It looks wonderful and I still love love love your table area.

  18. Looks awesome...I love my granite and I love my undermounted sink...for the crumb-sweeping alone. Isn't amazing how heavy that stuff is...I couldn't believe how many super strong guys it took to put in...I had to leave the room I was so nervous someone was going to drop it and take their foot out!

  23. Your new granite looks wonderful! We put granite in over a year ago and love ours. It looks very similiar to yours. I like your undermount black granite sink. We put in stainless steel undermount but it starts to look yucky after a while, I think. I like yours much better. Anyways, your whole kitchen, breakfast nook is just darling!

  54. Oh Ms. Rhoda...it looks amazing! Everything about your kitchen is just beautiful. I especially LOVE that undermount sink. If for no other reason than being able to sweep all those crumbs right into the sink...LOVE that! With 4 kids we make lots of crumbs, and it is a pain in my hiney when those pesky little stragglers get stuck in the crevices of the sink edge! I'm dreaming of a kitchen update...maybe one day!

  55. Wow wow wow! Looks stunning!
So how did you purchase your granite thru a company who does installation? or did you just buy the slab and find someone to install it? I am asking cuz you kept your backsplash. My parents own an interior decorating business and we sell granite, but our fabricator always says that the backsplash can get damaged during the change and so we have to tell people to pick a new backsplash - which then adds to the cost of the job....I would love to hear from you!
    Thanks for sharing Rhoda!
I am totally in love with your kitchen!

I am so in love with the sink ... it is absolutely gorgeous! Very nice redo all the way around!

  95. It's perfect! I imagine you'll want to putter all day long in there. I'm so glad to see the undermount sinks! They have really come a LONG ways. We had a client years ago that had an early one...on the early ones, there was a VERY slight gap between the top of the sink and the countertop...and it got full of the nastiest stuff...their countertop was a green English granite, incredibly expensive (he's a very good, VERY successful PI attorney, so the expense was nothing to him but still)...and that was the first place I saw the undermount sink...and I like yours so much better...and I do believe that I like your granite better also...that was lovely, but yours is lovely AND versatile..can't beat that.

And I am on the lookout for an espresso brown paint for our bathroom cabinets and mirrors...thanks to your lovely comments and tutorials!

  97. The granite is pretty, but I think you should have done the back

I can't wait to see when you get the back splash that matches better. Knowing the decorator that you are you, the fighting colors will probably drive you nuts till you get it. So for your sake, hope it's soon! lol.
Be sure to post that too!
    Meanwhile Enjoy.

  104. I too have one of those granite sink (mine is minus the two sections)! I have loved it the three years that we've had it! We found the "Weiman Granite Corian Cleaner & Polish" to work real well to help refresh it when it starts to get white water stains.

Have fun cooking in your "new" kitchen!

  105. Hello,
Hope along with the compliments you don't mind a little professional critiquing.
As I have to agree with some of the others, although the granite is beautiful, if you don't change the splash, it makes too many variables in the things that matters most in any kitchen. Cabinets, Counter tops, Splash & Sink. The biggest focal point of all and now you seem to just have too many different colors that really fight with each other! In a big way. Unfortunately they should unify the space and yours tend to fight each other. Along with an already quite busy kitchen & dining (zebra prints, bunnies, fruit, flowers, rooster, pigs, baskets, tole, pottery, lamp, several shades of green & etc etc. it unfortunately looks like you just found a bunch of sales and threw caution to the wind.
I must say, in all the homes I have been in, you have the only home I have ever seen that has what zebra striped place mats with bunny chair cushions and a lamp ON a cake pedestal. lol.

In browsing your blog, a little advice, I know you love garage sales but I must say 13 things on an entry table (that again do not compliment each other !) is a bit overwhelming & a family room with 3 throws and ( I lost count of the number of conflicting patterns and colors) you may want to familiarize yourself with the term, over-decorated.

    It's a common decorating error.

Hope you get that new splash, it will help a lot.

    Debra

    ReplyDelete
  106. Forgot to add, with all your decorating I notices there were NO family photos out, other than yours and a LOT of monograms!
Perhaps some family photos would look nice on your entry table, wall, or in the family room instead of so many "things."
